Breathing Exercises for Trail Running
Trails break the rhythm road runners rely on. Climbs push you into hard breathing within a minute, descents demand focus, and the terrain rarely lets you settle into one pace for long. The skill that matters is getting your breath back quickly after every climb.
How to use them
Practise belly breathing at home so it is automatic on the hills. On flats and gentle grades, stay on nasal breathing to keep effort honest; on climbs, switch to the 2:1 hard-effort pattern. At the top, use a few rounds of Pursed-Lip Recovery before you open up on the descent, and keep Side-Stitch Relief for when a long downhill jolts one loose.
New to this? Start with Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing: Deep belly breathing for oxygen efficiency and endurance.

Breath mechanics while you move.
