Breathing Exercises for Rowing
Rowing is a full-body effort folded at the hips, and on the catch your diaphragm is compressed exactly when you want air. Rowers who match the breath to the stroke stay smoother at high rates, and recover faster between pieces.
How to use them
Diaphragmatic Breathing builds the base off the water. During hard pieces, the 2:1 pattern gives you a breathing rhythm that can sit inside the stroke cycle. Use the Start-Line Reset while you are sitting ready at the start, and Cool-Down Descend after the final piece or erg test.
New to this? Start with Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing: Deep belly breathing for oxygen efficiency and endurance.
Every day: build the base
Train daily, away from the action.

In training
Breath mechanics while you move.

Game day: before and between efforts
Before and between efforts.
- Start-Line Reset — Long exhales to tame pre-race nerves in the final minutes.
Recovery
Bring the system back down.
- Cool-Down Descend — Progressively slower breathing to close out a session.
